Natural Disaster

Natural disaster insurance is a mandatory extension of coverage for all general insurance contracts (multi-risk home, all-risk car, professional premises, etc.) outside of boat insurance contracts.

According to Article L125-1 of the Insurance Code, the Cat-Nat coverage coversdirect non-insurable material damage caused by the abnormal intensity of a natural agent, when the usual measures to be taken to prevent such damage could not prevent their occurrence or could not be taken. »

Non-exhaustive list:

– floods (by runoff, overflowing watercourses or rising water table);

– phenomena related to the action of the sea (mechanical shock of waves, marine submersion, etc.);

– soil dryness-hydration (shrinkage-swelling of clays);

– ground movements;

– avalanches;

– earthquakes

– volcanism;

Cyclonic winds with speeds above 145 km/h on average over 10 minutes, or 215 km/h in gusts.

Damage caused by strong winds that do not unite the characteristics of cyclonic winds (storms, tornadoes), as well as damage caused by hail or the weight of snow are covered by other guarantees, included in the property damage contracts in a mandatory (storm) or optional (hail and snow) manner.

Fire

Depending on the home insurance contracts available from the different insurance companies, the risks taken care of are not necessarily similar. Generally speaking, the civil liability guarantee, mandatory legal minimum for tenants and roommates of unfurnished housing and co-owners allows compensation to third parties for a claim that would affect them and for which the insured party would be responsible. As well as water damage, fires and explosions are automatically compensated, a fire can break out in a home and spread to the neighbours’ homes.

Fire coverage itself is therefore systematically included in the most complete home insurance package, the multi-risk household insurance contract. It makes it possible to directly compensate the insured for their real estate and movable assets. For home insurance, precious goods and objects of value, or even electronic equipment, may be excluded from this guarantee, or be simply limited to the level of compensation provided via a ceiling.

– A fire that might break out in an accidental manner;

direct explosions that would result from a fire;

– fires resulting from lightning;

– damage caused by smoke;

– damage resulting from the intervention of the emergency services (forced doors, furniture damaged by fire hoses, etc.);

explosions and implosions.

Operating loss

The concept of business interruption refers to the deprivation of premises and/or equipment, leading to a partial or total halt in activity and a reduction in turnover for the company. Business interruption cover provides compensation for loss of earnings over the period affected by the interruption or reduction in business activity. In the event of a loss of business following an incident (such as a natural disaster, machine breakdown, fire, theft, etc.), the operator can apply to his insurance company for compensation, with the aim of restarting his business effectively and without suffering the impact on the company’s financial situation.

To be covered for business interruption, you need to take out business interruption cover. This can be taken out as part of a comprehensive business insurance policy.

Theft

Depending on the different insurance companies, the claims covered may vary. For most contracts, these are as follows:

burglary or scaling of premises;

– thefts with threats and violence;

– theft following clandestine entry (for example, a burglar steals when you are present at home);

– theft through the use of false keys (picking locks, stolen keys, etc.);

– theft by an employee of the insured, only if a complaint is lodged.

Acts of vandalism (destruction or voluntary damage to property) can also be covered. Real estate damage after a theft can be covered, for example. As usual, we advise you to read the general and special conditions of your contract so as not to have any surprises in the event of an incident.

Litigation may take place with your insurer, especially in the absence of a security and protection system. Avoid this by knowing your insurance policy like the back of your hand.

Some situations do not involve compensation:

– theft committed by a member of the tenant’s or owner’s family, or with their complicity;

– objects stolen in an outbuilding (a cellar or a garage, for example) are not covered;

– objects stolen from a yard, garden or common areas of a building are not covered.

Property that is in your home and that belongs to you is generally covered:

– protection and precious objects;

– movable property;

electronic appliances.

Water damage

Water damage insurance is used to repair damage related to the action of water. If you are a tenant of a dwelling, you must take out this insurance. You must check with your company the risks covered by the contract.

In the event of an incident, you must provide your insurance within 5 days and complete an amicable report to describe the incident. Your insurer may ask for an expert opinion before compensating you.

Water damage insurance covers risks related to the action of water, but certain risks are sometimes excluded by insurers.

Damage generally covered is damage resulting from leaks, pipe breakage or overflow (from a bathtub or a washing machine, for example). You must check the guarantees covered in your contract and the cases of exclusion.

Remember to also inform your neighbours, your co-ownership trustee and your landlord (if you are a tenant) of the extent of your coverage.

Storm

Storm coverage is included in home insurance contracts. It is part of the SHS (storm, hail and snow) guarantee, which covers damage generated by strong winds, the weight of ice or snow on the roof as well as the effect of hail.

Be careful, some elements are excluded from the warranty, such as light constructions or some external elements.
